Late Summer Gardening

The pumpkin plant looks like it exploded across my garden. It has twisted and coiled around the perimeter, and we are hoping for a nice harvest. Most of the squash were taken out by borers (my new nemesis) and the cucumbers and lettuces have come and gone, leaving me with some awkward empty spaces. But, the August gems are ready to pick, and in their finest form.
Organic cherries, brandy wines, and orange pears make a temporary centerpiece.

A summertime vow...

Whenever my birthday rolls around it always reminds me that summer is halfway over. So, for the rest of this summer, I vow that...
I will spend more time exploring everything our little town has to offer.
I will savor more fresh corn whenever possible.
I will let the kids water the garden their way more often.

Me: Lover of the forces of nature.

The forces that be have answered the lawn's pleadings by unleashing a monsoon on the garden state.
Storms like the one that passed through yesterday always leave me in awe. I love to sit out on the porch with the kids and feel the wind gust and listen to the sound of the raindrops battering down on the roof. To me it is a sign of summer, and it left the plants happy and filled the air with the scent of the basil from our garden.

Porch Picnic

Since Danny hasn't had a day of in a couple weeks now, the kids have been a little on edge. I have tried to keep a busy agenda so they are so preoccupied it doesn't come to mind as much. The other day we decided to have a park picnic, and sure enough a storm rolled in and extinguished that plan. But, as promised, they got to eat their sausage and peppers with penne, and their tomato salad, and their fresh berries and peaches, and even drink their sparkling blood orange frizzante...
... high off the damp ground, up on our porch.

Eating Local

Our early harvest of berries has been such a wonderful treat- the kids love picking and eating delicious ripe fruits each morning.
Since many of our plants are still seedlings, we have been taking trips to local farms for produce & inspiration with the help of local harvest...
...and my has it been a beautiful tour of New Jersey.

Do you see what I see?

...other than the wind dispersed seeds and crumpled leaves.

The garden calls...

...and it is impossible to ignore. Especially when it looks this perfect outside.

If you lived in my 'hood...

...you would most likely be eating banana muffins right about now.
Phia would deliver them to your door with a little pat of Plugra sprinkled with sea salt. And since our muffin liners were somehow stretched out, there would probably be a papery creation to enjoy until real flowers are abound.
Just a thought for anyone who might be relocating.

Flooding and Dr. Appointments and Preschool Registration, Oh My!

After a month long lull of small jobs and relaxation, I was really amazed when all of the taxing deeds and (somewhat) dismal tasks needed to be taken care of all in the same week.
Like locating a couple of stranded NJ Transit passengers in Newark during a flood, and taking two trips to the doctor, and consignment sale volunteering, and preschool registration.
Between nursing my daughter back to good health and finishing a last minute cake order, we found time to go bask in the warm sun and enjoy a very deserved break from the craziness of this past week.

Snow vs. New Jersey

Phia loves everything about snow. Playing in snow, eating snow, sledding in snow, shoveling snow, shaking snow out of her boots.
She is very much like her mom.

a taste of summer

today we experienced some bathing suit weather.
the kids thoroughly enjoyed the pre-summer fun. phia got to put a summer skirt i made for her to use, while danny spent his day cooking (and occasionally spraying the babies with the hose).
