Room to Grow

I have been squeezing Ori into too-tight shirts- my boy hit a growth spurt and has been in need of new duds.
Based off the size of an old shirt, I made him this little pullover with a medium weight knit I found while thrifting.
I was so happy when I made my first successful placket, and have been looking for excuses to make more. It was a simple 1.5 hour project- most of the time was spent on the buttonholes.
Thankfully, he's a fan.

My Treat

One of my tried and true standbys for last minute party favors, and favorite little treats to indulge upon, have to be truffles. Clean and classic, these are a chic little delicacy that are sure to impress. I made a batch for a recent "ladies night out" for my daughter's school- a last minute decision that proved to be a good one. Although it is a little involved with chocolate melting and hand dipping, it is relatively low key since the oven and mixer are not needed for this confection.

Ganache

Dark Chocolate Chips 1 lb.
Heavy Cream 8 fl. oz.
Sugar 1 tbsp.
Butter. room temperature 2 tbsp.

Heat the heavy cream and sugar in a medium sauce pan until it just starts to boil. With the chocolate in a medium sized stainless steel bowl, pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let sit for about one minute. Gently stir together with a rubber spatula until it is has completely blended together, and then add in the butter. Let this sit, covered, for about one hour, or until it has thickened slightly.

The ganache should be slightly firm, so soften it by mixing it with a rubber spatula, and then place it into a piping bag. One a sheet try lined with either a baking mat or parchment paper, pipe the desired size, about the width of a quarter. Once the ganache is all piped. Let the truffles sit until they have slightly firmed, and then roll them as round as possible, and then place in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.
Now is the time to either coat the truffles and then hand dip them in tempered chocolate, or finish them by rolling them in cocoa powder. I think the hand dipped method, although more time consuming, yields a much more elegant result.

To coat them in cocoa, place about 10 oz. of cocoa in a bowl and then completely cover each truffle evenly.

But if you are up to hand dipping, here is a nice little video that briefly explains chocolate tempering.
In a stainless steel bowl, melt down 2 lbs. of chocolate over a water bath. Once it has completely melted and the side of the bowl feels warm, take the bowl off of the heat source, and then add in an additional 1 lb. of chocolate chips. Mix this gently until the chips have melted and the side of the bowl feels cool against your skin. If, when you are working with the chocolate, it starts to set, you can quickly place it over that water bath, and then mix until it is fluid again. Test the chocolate by dipping in a butter knife and letting it sit for 3-4 minutes to make sure it is still in temper- I usually do this after I get it tempered, and then each time I warm it just to be sure.

With a little chocolate in the palm of your hand, give each truffle a thin coat of chocolate and then place on a parchment lined baking sheet. This step makes it much easier to work with the truffles when you are dipping them. Once they are all pre-coated, set up a "chocolate dipping station". From left to right, I put down 1. a piece of parchment to set dipped truffles onto, 2. the tempered bowl of chocolate with a fork and knife- the fork for dipping and the knife for pushing the truffle off of the fork, and 3. the tray of pre-coated truffles. Put 3-4 truffles in the bowl of chocolate at a time, and then push chocolate over the top of them. Using the fork, pull the truffle from the chocolate and then gently scrape the bottom of the truffle on the edge of the bowl to remove excess chocolate. Place the end of the fork against the parchment, and then with the knife, gently push the truffle off of the fork.

Once they are all finished, they are ready to enjoy!

Darling, Darling Ranges Dress

That's not a typo- I just had to reiterate how darling this dress is.
For the past couple weeks I've been trying to scrap together enough time to make this dress- especially after I saw this very pretty polka dot version. It is made from the Darling Ranges pattern by Megan Nielsen, and I am pretty in love with it.
I have to admit, it is one of the first patterns that I have followed from start to finish, while taking part in only a minimal amount of "winging it". I kept it simple and made mine with a beige, medium weight, textured suiting material and vintage value buttons.
After I started to put on the finishing touches I noticed that it was a little large on me. As a quick fix I top stitched around the waist with elasticized thread, and really liked the extra drape.
It was very worth the wait, and I am very excited to make a few more.

Right On Time

In the midst of holiday craziness I put together a little backpack made from striped denim, intended to house Ori's goods that he likes to lug around with him. He was genuinely excited when he opened up his gift, and I was just relieved that he loved it even though the train applique had no face.
And it was made just in time for Ori to take with him to the New York Botanical Garden's train show.
Ori and Danny met up with Uncle Chris to marvel at little replicas of NYC landmarks and trains scattered throughout a lush backdrop of living plants.
Needless to say, I think he enjoyed his outing- after seeing the pictures that Danny took I am considering taking Phia before it ends.

Season's Greetings

Fake Snow

The winter decorations are making their way up around our place.
After learning this very handy technique, Phia and I started a little production line of snow flakes and paper chains made out of old school handouts and scraps. I love the way the snowflakes turn out- and once you get the hang of it they are pretty easy to put together.
I couldn't resist snipping up doilies to add into the mix, and when I started stringing everything up it got a little reminiscent of my favorite scene in the movie Elf.

To be Young and Fashionable

While cropping these photos I realized how grown up Phia is now. We put this little outfit together to wear with the blue jacket I recently made, and when she came marching out of her room, I was taken aback as how much older this ensemble made her appear. Maybe it was just the combination of the stylish little chambray and the ankle length slacks- or maybe she just is getting older right in front of my eyes.

Cloudy Ambitions

One of my decorating dilemmas at our new place has been how to set up the kids' bedroom. Since they are still sharing the space, I didn't want it to be overwhelmingly girly or boyish.

Enter Seuss clouds- inspired by the lofty clouds floating in the background of Horton Hatches the Egg, and painted by the kids with the help of a paper stencil.
It is still waiting for a more permanent place on the wall, but I think it's a fun little addition to Ori's space.

My sewing time has vastly slowed down lately, and I have noticed myself trying to plan out every next chance I will have to sneak away and sew. I bought a cute pattern or two and have been trying to match them up with the perfect fabric to ensure a pretty finished product. And sometimes I have to remind myself that some of my most favorite projects are simply by chance. This shirt started out as the skirt piece for a dress I have been longing to put together, but quickly realized that the fabric wasn't going to work for the pattern after I had cut it.
But I might be okay with that.

I picked up sewing after summers spent visiting two very crafty grandmas. They have each been majorly inspiring and supportive, and when one was visiting this past week she took notice to the fact that my sewing space was lacking a work table.
We found this little piece at my favorite thrift store and brought it home for $9.99.
I gave it a little touch up with a new coat of paint and even found a home for it between stacks of vintage fabric and my ironing board. I am pretty into it and definitely ready to put it to use.

In Forty Five Minutes: Lentil Soup with Chard

It's getting cold and I am ready for soup. My mother and grandmother are in town and this was put together for lunch with items pulled my pantry and swiss chard that was ready to come in from the garden. This lentil soup is, as far as soups go, a quick and easy production that really hits the spot.

Lentil and Chard Soup

1 tbsp. vegetable oil
1 yellow onion, roughly diced
2 carrots, shaved and coined
2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup red wine*

2 cups dry lentils
2 cups broth, chicken or vegetable
2 cups water
1 - 8 oz. can of diced or crushed tomatoes
1 tbsp brown sugar
2 bay leaves
1 sprig oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

6 stalks swiss chard, roughly chopped

Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Sweat the onions for 2-3 minutes then add in the carrots and cook together for another 2 minutes. Add in the garlic and a pinch of salt and then let everything cook for 2-3 minute longer. Add in the red wine and cook off the alcohol, and then add in the lentils, brother, tomatoes, brown sugar, and herbs. Let this come to a boil and then reduce down to low-medium heat, cover and let simmer for about 25 minutes. Add in the roughly chopped chard leaves and stalks, and let simmer for another 5 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste, and then enjoy!

*I usually have a little excess wine on hand to cook with, but if you are in a jam and need a substitute, I have found that red grape juice with a cap full of red wine vinegar works well.

So I am a little late with showing off this year's Halloween costumes...

After repeat viewings of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" the kids agreed upon Charlie and Sally Brown. We made last minute goodie bags adorned with Snoopy and Woodstock and then tried to get Phia's hair as poofy as possible.
My mom pointed out that Phia might be a little more close in character with Frieda- the little girl with naturally curly hair who also has a cat she takes along everywhere, and I suppose I see an uncanny resemblance.

Winter Frost

With a little more free time now that Ori is enjoying himself at school during the mornings, I have been finishing projects a little more quickly.
These two quilts were turned out for cold nights this winter, which seems to already be upon us.
While I used many of the same fabrics for both, I was pleasantly surprised with how different each one was upon completion. Except that both are soft, scrunchy and seriously warm.

Good Gourds

We have reached that time of year- pumpkins and squash are everywhere.

Whether you find them at the neighborhood pumpkin patch or layered in a grill-cooked ratatouille, I am a fan.

Ratatouille ala Ratatouille

16 oz. tomato sauce

2 yellow squash
2 zucchini
1 medium size eggplant
2 roma tomatoes

1 sprig rosemary
1 sprig parsley
1 sprig thyme
2 cloves crushed garlic

Olive oil

Salt and pepper

In a medium sized skillet, casserole dish, or cake pan, cover the bottom with a layer of tomato sauce. Using a mandoline or a sharp knife, slice the squash, zucchini eggplant and tomato into thin medallions. Place them around the side of the pan and work towards the middle, overlapping slightly, until the pan is filled. Drizzle generously with olive oil, season to taste, and lay the fresh herbs and garlic across the top. Cut a piece of parchment to cover the top of the cooking vessel and fit snuggly to help trap steam to evenly cook the ratatouille. Either place into a hot grill and let cook for 20-30 minutes, or place in a 350 degree oven and cook for 45 minutes.

Library Jacket

No, I haven't forgotten about Ori- I just picked some time consuming projects for him that took way more time than anticipated.

I finished snipping strings on this little blazer as we were headed out the door for Ori's school.
The jacket was based off of one that was much too large for him, but altered to be a little more casual for day to day use, and the fabric was found in Joann's red tag section.

I am glad to have finished it, and in the process I got to enjoy some noteworthy podcasts. If you are looking for some mental stimulation while sewing, might I suggest this food centric interview with Michael Pollan, and this moving piece about Playing for Change. Happy Sewing!

Having Hobbies

With school starting it has definitely been interesting trying to balance everything I want to complete in one day.

Somethings are more crucial, like dinner, and somethings are less important, like doing dishes. Aside from that, spending a little time to sew and make things special for the kids is hugely gratifying- and I have to admit I am pretty excited about the upcoming kids clothes week challenge.
I made this little blue and white number for Phia's school colors day. Although her expression might suggest she didn't love it, I think she was just eager to get back to her favorite hobby...

I made this is my usual hap-hazard, improvised manner. The bodice was sized off of a loose fitting button down shirt and then I made the skirt about 5" wider. Here are the pieces you will need to put together this dress:

a. collar x 2
b. sleeves x 2
c. bodice back
d. bodice chest x 2
e. two strips of 3/4" bias to cover the bodice edge
f. skirt x 2

My daughter is usually size 4-5T, so using a large size 5T button down dress shirt, I made a template for the bodice. I measured 3.5" down from the arm pit and decided that that was how long the bodice would be. The skirt was sized to be just a bit wider than the bodice so there wouldn't be too much drape- the back bodice piece I started with was 14.5" wide, so I added 5" to the width. The length is 17", taking into consideration the bottom hem. I made a template using the sleeves from the button down, tapering them to make it a little more feminine, and made the collar based off of a collar pattern from an adult shirt, but made to the approximate length of the neckline once the bodice was assembled. As a note, on all seams I used a zig zag stitch.

1. Assemble the bodice- with right sides facing, sew together the back and chest bodice.

2. Press and topstitch the side and shoulder seams.

3. Assemble the sleeves.

4. Attach the sleeves to the bodice- flip the sleeve so it is right side out, and starting at the sleeve seam and the side seam on the bodice, pin into place, working up towards the shoulder, and then sew together.

5. Sew the 3/4" bias to the edge of the bodice. I aligned mine with the edge right up to the center fold of the bias.

6a. Assemble the collar- sew along the rounded edge.

6b. Turn it out, press it flat, and then fold over the edge about 1/4".

7a. Starting from the edges of the bodice, pin the collar into place. If the collar is too short (less than 1") then you can make tiny pleats with the back neckline. If it is too long, mark the desired length, adjust it and try again.

7b. Make buttonholes or use snaps on the bias edge. I used four buttons on my dress. Pin the buttonhole bias on top of the bias edge that will have the buttons- you can hand stitch this in place as this is how it will be sewn together in step 10.

8. Assemble the skirt- with right sides facing, sew together your skirt.

9. Gather the top skirt edge with elastic thread in your bobbin, sewing 1/4" from the edge.

10. Attach your skirt to your bodice- with right side facing and starting with the side seams, pin the skirt to the bodice. Gently work it around so that the gathers are as even as possible.

11. Finish the dress- flip the dress right side out, press and topstitch the skirt and bodice seam down. Hem your sleeves and skirt bottom and then attach your buttons. Finished!

Mama Marinara

I suppose it was made official after a morning spent at the DMV; I am now a New Jersey resident. So I thought I might celebrate by sharing a recipe made with garden state grown tomatoes.
Some of the more interesting looking tomatoes were put into a batch of marinara with fresh basil and oregano, and the finished sauce was pretty delicious.

2 lbs. fresh tomatoes, roughly chopped

1 tbsp. olive oil
3 white onions, roughly chopped
4 cloves garlic, roughly diced

7- 28 oz. cans of whole tomatoes

2 tbsp. dried oregano
1 tbsp. garlic powder

4 sprigs fresh oregano, chopped

4 stems fresh basil, chopped

3 stems fresh parsley, chopped

Clean and prepare your fresh tomatoes and set aside. In a large stock pot, heat the olive oil on medium-high heat. Sweat the onions for 4-5 minutes, or until they are translucent, and then add in the garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes longer. Add in the fresh tomatoes and cook for 3 minutes while stirring so that nothing scorches on the bottom of the pot. Add in the canned tomatoes along with two cans worth of water. Add in the dried herbs and seasoning, bring to a simmer and then drop the heat to low. Let this simmer for 6-8 hours, making sure to stir occasionally. Once it is close to being finished, add in the fresh herbs. Let this simmer for 10 minutes and then take off the heat and let cool. Take a hand blender, or a regular blender working in small batches, and puree until everything comes to a smooth sauce consistency.

Prepare your jars that will be used for canning, about 5-6 will be needed for this recipe, and bring the sauce to a simmer again. Following these directions, can the sauce and let cool. If you don't have the supplies, you can always freeze the sauce in gallon ziplock bags.

In Twenty Five Minutes: Bulgur Joes

To continue with some of my favorite quick meals, I thought I might share my take on the vegetarian sloppy joe- it is big on protein, flavor and fiber, and is a great way to use up left over chili.
1 cup bulgur
2 cups water or cooking liquid
1 pinch salt

1 tbsp. vegetable oil
1/2 white onion diced
2 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 white wine or water
1 tbsp. barbeque sauce
1 tsp. whole grain mustard
1 tsp. cumin

1 bowl leftover vegetarian chili or 1 - 8 oz. can of your favorite

Start by cooking the bulgur. In a small sauce pan bring the bulgur, water and salt to a simmer, cover, and let cook for about 14-18 minutes, or until the bulgur is tender.

Once it is just about done cooking, heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan and sweat the onion. Once the onions are translucent add in the garlic and cook for one minute, and then season to taste with salt. Add in the wine (or other liquid), barbeque sauce, mustard and cumin, and cook together for one minute longer to cook off the alcohol.

On medium-low heat add in your chili. I like to smash all the kidney beans just so the finished sloppy Joe mix has a more consistent texture, but you can leave them whole if you like. Once everything is mixed together, add in your cooked bulgur and season to taste.

I like mine on a toasted ciabatta roll with extra sharp cheddar, but you could just as easily eat it like my son- out of a bowl with crackers.

I've been on a wardrobe building kick. When I put in a coldweather fabric order last week I added this floral print on a whim. It was a little different than what I had anticipated, but I didn't want it to go to waste.
So I made a sleeveless button up with waist line shirring and lots of drape. I am kind of into it, especially on these awkwardly muggy fall days. It has that extra versatile quality that I have been needing for preschool pick ups and all other last minute outings.

In Twenty Minutes: Zucchini & Corn Gemelli

Summer is slowly fading away, while school is in full swing. Even though much of my time has been spent reorganizing and getting the kids to adjust to new schedules, I'd still like to keep some interesting and tasty meals on our menu.
I thought I might share some of my quickly thrown together meals that make everyone happy. Made under twenty minutes, the preparation for this dish is simple and time effective.

1# Gemelli

1 tbsp. canola oil

1 white onion, chopped
1 medium zucchini, chopped
2 clove garlic

1 spring of rosemary, chopped
1 sprig of thyme, chopped
salt to taste
1/2 cup white wine, stock or water

2 ears of corn kernels, or 1 1/2 cups frozen corn
1-2 tbsp. olive oil

Start by boiling water for the pasta- the vegetables can be prepped while the water comes to a boil.

Once everything is chopped and the corn kernels are cut off of the ears, your water should be ready, and you can start cooking your gemelli, which takes about 10 minutes. In a large frying pan heat the canola oil over medium-high heat. Sweat the onions until they are translucent, and then add in the zucchini and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until it starts to lightly take color. Add in the garlic and cook for one minute, and then add in the rosemary, thyme and salt and cook for another minute. Pour in your cooking liquid and let it cook, uncovered, for 1-2 minutes.
At this point the pasta should be ready, so drain the water and set aside until needed. Add the corn kernels to the zucchini in your frying pan, and let it cook together for a minute longer. Add in your pasta, and mix everything together while lightly coating with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper, and enjoy the easy meal and quick clean up.

Simple Shirting Quilt

Home Bodies

The good: No major damage following the hurricane.

The bad: The storm left us without power and water for a week.

So all those plans to sew until I ran out of thread were pushed aside while we spent the week keeping the kids entertained away from home. The storm hit us right in the middle of Danny's annual vacation, and while it was a little sad that that was how he spent his only time off from work, I don't know how I would have faired the week without him. And while I loved our time spent with his family and trips to the beach, it made me realize what a home body I am- how sometimes all I want is to sit back and enjoy fig spread and goat cheese.

Blue Period

I will admit that I have never been huge on wearing the color blue, but for some reason I keep making things that would lead someone to believe otherwise.
This dress was started on a whim- I just finished a long term quilting project and wanted to make something simple that could be worn for dressing up or down. I kind of had two muses in mind: Jane Krakowski from 30 Rock meets Kate Middleton chic.
I kind of love it- I made it with a stiffer jacquard shirting from Fabric.com that turned out to be surprisingly nice for costing just $1.95/yard. I kept the sleeves and bodice a little wide with a little darting and elastic cinching at the waist, but tried to make the skirt loose without being full.

Calm Before the Storm

Usually you can find me most relaxed when I water my little garden in the morning. It wasn't a big production this year- it started with Cherokee and cherry tomatoes sharing space with venturing cucumber vines, and after I dumped the loose seeds from the bottom of my sowing kit I ended up with some surprise pepper plants, marigolds and a young zucchini.Right now I am listening to the wind gust and pounding rain on the windows, and can't believe the worst of this storm is still hours away. It's a little sad to think that when I go out to water my little garden it will probably be torn up and unrecognizable.
But I am also very thankful to be waiting it out with the family couped up in our little abode, and I hope that everyone is safe and doing much of the same.

A Capitol Trip.

On Monday we took a little weekday getaway to D.C. for Danny's annual end of summer vacation time.
We enjoyed a trip to the zoo, a surprise earthquake, and the cool, breezy days which were perfect for bike riding to the monuments. Overall, pretty exciting. After we visited with family we headed home before the winds pick up from any wandering hurricanes.

Daring Dinners: Salmon Two Ways

To me fish is very intimidating in the kitchen. When Danny brought home a really nice salmon, I kind of anticipated on leaving the preparation up to him.

He decided to make a sushi spread, ranging from simple, like this roll with shaved scallions, and the more elaborate "everything rolls" with crab red peppers, cucumbers and avocado. He left the rest of the fish in the fridge for me to use up during the week. After a little reluctance, I turned to Martha for some inspiration.
I started with her Soy Glazed Salmon recipe, and made subtle changes to cut down on the sugar. Add with that the sushi rice, home made miso dressing, and carrots glazed in the extra sauce, and you have a pretty successful dinner.
For the salmon check out this recipe- the adjustments I made are as follows:

Ingredients

   * 1 Tbsp. packed light-brown sugar
   * 2 tbsp. cup olive oil
   * 1/4 C soy sauce
   * 1/4 C fresh lemon juice
   * 2 tablespoons dry white wine, or water
   * 2 pounds salmon fillet
   * 4 cloves crushed garlic, for the roasting pan

I simply roasted the garlic in the same pan as the fish, and found it to be a lovely addition to the recipe.

The miso dressing was made with a hand mixer, and is really easy to throw together:

1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/3 cup salad oil
2 tbsp. miso paste

Just mix it all together until it is completely emulsified- it is really tasty.

Gentle August

Besides the occasional downpour, this August has been mild and serene. Not too hot, not too stuffy- just the way I like it.

Thus my wardrobe has not been strictly limited to tank tops. I made this top from a gauze that had shirring across it, and kept it loose and airy.
It was thrown together to be worn with my shorts which have been sitting in my "to-finish" pile for weeks. They are like the teal shorts I made earlier this summer- based off of a burdastyle pattern, but made with ditsy cotton I ordered off of Superbuzzy. The shorts have a side zipper, and I didn't add pockets as to keep the shape simple.

I cut the top large in the shape above- I stitched up the shoulders, hemmed the sleeve, and then sewed together the sides. After I hemmed the neck and the bottom edge, I added a little lace hem tape detail.

Birthday Thoughts

Phia woke up to birthday balloons floating around the house. Her reaction was classic- so filled with amazement and excitement. I had a kind of epiphany in which I realized that I remember five very well- I can recall the details of my fifth birthday like the cake we ate, the games we played, and the confetti that fell out of the cards. It reminded me that I might have to step it up a bit, so Phia will have those same special feelings when she thinks back to her early birthdays. I wonder what little things she will remember- the outfit she picked out, the endless rain storm, the Ikea lunch she requested, or all of the sweet messages, cards and gifts she received from friends and family.

It's really hard to imagine that five years have passed since I first held my little Phia. It's surreal, it's incredible. She is so sweet, so curly, and so funny, and there are so many ways she has enriched my life and filled it with such pure happiness. Happy birthday, sweet girl!

We have been hitting the local farmers market as much as possible. It has a nice selection of produce, baked goods and my favorite, Hoboken Farms.
The bike ride is short and hilly, but we usually get the best parking space. Since tomatoes are abundant, Phia likes to call it the "tomato market", and is always scouting out a new variety to try. Two pints for $3, experiment away.

Snipping Strings

That's probably the best way to sum up my sewing time lately- finishing up projects and trying to resupply my little shop.
I had some requests for children back packs, and after digging through my stash of fun prints I came out with some of my never been touched Heather Ross beauties. A lot of love goes into sewing these little back packs, as I can imagine little children like Phia and Ori wearing them on their first day of school.
And speaking of projects with a lot of love put into them, I was asked to make a very meaningful quilt that will be a very beautiful gift. I felt truly honored to be asked to make it, and was happy to snip the final string and mail it out.

We are playing catch up after a weekend of parties. Cakes were baked and a birthday was celebrated while laundry was left unfolded, so I hope to be back to our normal state in a day or two.

After finishing a baking spree of significant proportions, our family went to celebrate Danny's little sister's sixteenth birthday party. We cut loose and enjoyed Kate's party, which was just as over the top as one would imagine a New Jersey sweet sixteen to be.Highlights included the great guests, candy centerpieces, endless photo booth pictures, and celebrating Kate on her special day, and admiring what a sweet and well rounded young woman she has grown up to be.

Summer Salads: Ribbon Carrots

This is one of my most requested salads and also one of the easiest to throw together. My children devour this when I make it, and it is always a kid-favorite- I think it's the natural sweetness of the carrots.

1 pound of carrots, peeled with the tops cut off

1 tsp. sea salt
1 tsp. celery seed

1/3 cup canola oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1 tbsp whole grain or golden mustard

Prepare your carrots and then shave thin ribbons on a mandoline, following all safety guidelines as it can be very easy to cut yourself. If you don't have a mandoline use a vegetable peeler by gently peeling the carrot until only the center is left.

Using a blender or hand mixer, emulsify the oil, vinegar and mustard until it comes together. Sprinkle your salt and celery seed over the carrots, and then add the dressing- enough to lightly coat the carrots- right before serving.

It's been so hot that I haven't been too discerning about what I wear out lately, but I asked Danny to take a picture of my perfect summer outfit. I could probably wear it every day if the skirt wasn't so unmistakable.
My skirt was found in a Wichita thrift store- a vintage little chiffon gem that was probably hung up in someone's Grandmother's closet for years. With the original tags still attached and a spotty floral print, I knew it was coming home with me, and all it needed was to be sized down.

Goodbye, July

We are experiencing summer in full effect, and my is it glorious. Even though the kids aren't even in school yet, I love how free we feel with these long days. This summer I'd like to eat a whole lot of strawberries, put some miles on my bike, and wear more handmade sundresses.
The fabric I used was once our living room curtains- very Scarlett O'hara-esque, right? Maybe not- but it is nice and airy for muggy evenings, and it was pretty easy to throw together, the most difficult part was getting my machine to cooperate with the buttonholes.

Summer Salads: Spinach, Pear and Goat Cheese

Summer is upon us, and since it's really hard to muster up the energy to cook in a hot kitchen, I wanted to share some of my favorite recipes that involve little or no stove time. This has been my favorite early summer treat. I like its pure and simple flavors with the earthy taste of the goat cheese. While I love goat cheese, I know many people who aren't as crazy about it. More than likely your local grocer will have a nice chevre, and they are usually pretty inexpensive as far as cheeses go. If you haven't had it before, I think it's definitely worth a try.

This will make about two servings, so just adjust proportionally if you want more.

1/2 bosc pear, sliced into thin wedges
1/4 red onion, sliced thin

3 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
pinch salt

Slice your pear and onion as thin as possible. In a medium sized bowl, mix together the olive oil, vinegar, and salt, and then mix in your pears and onions. Let this sit for a minute while you prepare the rest of your salad- I like it best when these ingredients meld together first.

1 big handful of baby spinach, roughly two cups
fresh ground pepper
1 tablespoon fresh goat cheese, or chevre
sliced crusty bread, optional

Add the spinach in with the rest of the mix, and then give it a nice hit of fresh pepper. Mix it around so everything is nicely coated. Then, either spread the goat cheese out on your bread or mix it into your salad. If you aren't a fan, just replace the goat cheese with feta, an aged cheddar, or exclude it all together.

New Set of Wheels

...we finally have a Madsen. It is just as I had imagined and we have all been loving our family rides together. Danny and I switch off pulling the kids around, and I will admit it has gotten us out and exploring the less beaten paths around our new town.

Free time has been a limited asset lately. I haven't been particularly overwhelmed or completely consumed by anything- just preoccupied with dwelling issues, absurdly hot weather, and mystery fevers.
Our basement, including my sewing space, has been re-disorganized since our water issues in May, and is really resembling its disorderly-post-move-in condition. While it usually puts me in a rather uninspired mood when I have to shimmy things around to get some good working space, it has unsurfaced some cute fabrics that I had temporarily misplaced under the new goods. Consider it my spring cleaning for 2011?

Daring Dinners: Baba Ganoush

Alright, I will admit that some might not consider baba ganoush a meal; maybe a snack or appetizer. Not me. I could probably eat it anytime of day- breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Even if you make your own or pick up your favorite from the store, it's just too tasty to restrict when, and how much one should eat per day.
1 medium eggplant
2 cloves minced garlic*
1/2 lemon, juiced
2 tablespoons tahini or other nut butter**
1 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. salt
2 tablespoon olive oil
2 tablespoons sour cream

Roast your eggplant in an oven set at 375. Cut your egglant in half and cut slits along the length, and then drizzle with a generous amount of olive oil and place in the oven. Let this roast for about 15-20 minutes- when it is ready the flesh will be soft and will come off the skin easily. Let it cool, and then scoop into a blender. Add in the minced garlic, lemon juice and olive oil, and puree until it is smooth.
Add in your seasonings and mix together. Then add in the sour cream, and let your baba ganoush cool. I prefer it the next day as the garlic has had some time to really co-mingle with the other ingredients. Pita chips are the baba ganoush standard, but crusty breads, carrot sticks, and crackers make good vessels as well.

* If you are not a fan of raw garlic, you can give your cloves a nice roast with the eggplant.
**I didn't have tahini on hand so substituted this ingredient with pistachio paste. If you don't have tahini, or have a sesame or nut allergy, this recipe holds up without it.

Summer Preparations

It transitioned from chilly rain to hot and muggy literally overnight, and I am attempting to plan, make, and convert accordingly. A spot has been cleared for a slip-n-slide, a lineup of summer salads has been organized, and I found a little time to make some heat wave friendly attire.

Long Weekend

Summer is here, and I hope that everyone has a bright, beautiful weekend. Besides a very welcome heat wave, everything has become lush and alive again, and we have been enjoying the late evenings filled with that earthy summer smell.

I have one thing on my agenda for this long weekend: throwing together a bowl of chunky guacamole.

3 ripe avocados
1 white onion, finely diced
4 limes, juiced
4 sprigs of cilantro, finely diced
2 tsp. salt

Cut the avocados in half, and then take a spoon and scoop out the meat. Cut the avocados in large chunks, and lightly mash one to bind everything together. Add in your juice, cilantro, onion, and salt, and mix gently.

Longing for Shine

What feels like unlimited rain has been pouring down in these parts. It's been difficult to contain our newly-used-to-getting-out selves, and especially interesting when you add in a flooding basement.

Simplicity

On Saturday I had the pleasure of attending a bridal shower in the city. It was for a truly beautiful friend of mine who met her match- a charming man who also happens to be a very talented floral designer.
We were sent home with these gorgeous arrangements after an evening tea filled with good company and fortune readings. On my train ride back home I mulled over a few thoughts, such as one can never underestimate the therapeutic effect of a girly tea party, the deliciousness of scones with creme friache and raspberry jam, and the striking beauty of peonies.
This was my shower gift to the bride to be- a hand quilted throw in various weaves and colors of wine. I am hoping she will enjoy this simple gift as much as I enjoyed being a part of her shower.

Slow Sewing

I have been lingering on the same project a little longer than necessary. Last week I received boxes of old treasures from my childhood spent growing up in Wichita, Kansas.
It has been both nostalgic and melancholy, and it has been a little tempting to put all other matters on the back burner. But, at one point I did have full intentions of producing fun outfits for myself and the kids since there have been some really motivating sew alongs happening at Made by Rae and Elsie Marley.
And this was the first to be finished. Phia let me know that she mostly needed dresses, and wanted at least one that was pink. Everything after that was my choice, so I turned out this little number.
It is loosely based off a dress from Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross. I just added seam pockets and some detail lace on the bodice. Pink dress, done.

Spring Stitches

I have a thing for Mexican tapestry design. I've always been an admirer, especially of Oaxaca embroidery. It looks both meticulously planned out, yet free and lively.
I dug around and found my embroidery hoop and needles after seeing a very inspiring dress at a local estate sale. This is the first of a few rounds of hand stitching, and is currently up in my shop.

I Knead Bread

When possible I like to bake my own bread. It is a magical little process, from which you take a few ingredients, mix them together, and end up with something wholesome and delicious to snack on. So, before the summer heat makes turning on the oven feel like a chore (a cruel, cruel chore) I thought I might share my favorite recipe.

Whole Wheat Bread

Bread Flour 476g
Wheat Flour 204g

Yeast, active dry 4g
Milk 423g

Oil 40g
Sugar 20g
Salt 10g

*This recipe is for two loaves of bread

Heat your milk to a little warmer than body temperature- try for about 45 seconds in the microwave, and if its still a little cool, give it increments of 20 seconds until it is warm enough. Add your yeast to this and let it sit for about 3-4 minutes, until it has fully dissolved.

Pour the milk, yeast, oil, sugar and salt into the mixing bowl, and then put in the flours. With a dough hook attachment, mix this together for about 3 minutes on low speed until it has come together. Continue to mix for 4 minutes on medium speed. Place the dough in a bowl and cover it with a towel or plastic wrap, and let it rest for 1 hour.

After the hour has passed, divide the dough into two equal portions, and give it a fold and roll into a rough shape of the loaf. Place in its bread pan, and let rest for 15 minutes more. After the 15 minutes has passed, shape it into its final tube shape and place back into the bread pan.
Now you are ready to proof it, or allow it to rise. I find it easiest to do this by taking a coffee mug full of water, and microwaving it on the "boil" setting until it is producing steam. Moving very quickly, I open the microwave door, place in the bread pans with the hot mug and steam, and then quickly shut the microwave door. This traps in heat and steam, and allows the bread to rise in a warm and damp climate, which helps to keep the crust from cracking.

Let this rest for about an hour in the microwave. When it is ready it will have risen substantially, almost doubling in volume. You can check to see whether or not it is ready to place in the oven by using the "spring back" test- gently push on the loaf with your fingertip, pull your finger back, and wait to see if it springs back and reforms into its previous shape. If it does, go ahead and turn on your oven to 450, and while you are waiting for it to come to temp., give the loaves a nice milk wash by brushing on a layer of milk over the top.

Put the loaves into the oven, and let it bake for about 30 minutes- the crust will be a deep brown color, and when you stick in a digital thermometer, it will be ready when it reads 195. If you don't have a probe thermometer, you can try tapping on the bread, and listen for a "hollow" sound, or inserting a skewer, and feeling for residual heat.
Pull them out of the bread pans, let them cool for at least 20 minutes, and then enjoy.

Magnolia Dress

This little number was inspired after first glance of this mini boden dress, which seemed so perfect for Phia to wear to relative celebrations.
To be honest I loved it in yellow, but made it in purple after successfully dyeing some lavender fabric with red wine rit. It was a last minute project on Saturday afternoon before Easter, so I couldn't really be too picky. Phia likened the color to "those flower trees all over the place", which it is named for.
This is a post-Easter celebration shot, with the dress in need of a press and covered in bubble solution and ice cream. Although I tried to encourage Phia to keep her new dress clean, I think it made me cringe a little less knowing the supplies cost me about $7 to make it.
The construction is pretty simple with an a-line cut and lots of pleats around the neck. The inside is fully lined, and there is a zipper on the back, and it was made from a light weight twill from fabric.com.

Quiet Time

It's pretty quiet around my house right now. I am catching up on laundry while the kids blow bubbles on the porch; a stark contrast to our past week of outings in the city, tastings of NJ cuisine, and rainy movie nights. Now that our guests are back in California and the festivities of Easter are over, things feel a little more settled.
The kids are doing their best to embrace our old routines.

Haute Pizza

I am a self proclaimed pizza lover. Be it a plain or topping heavy, I am open to any good slice. We make pizza dough pretty frequently around my place. I make enough dough for four personal size pies. The kids usually devour theirs topped with barbeque & cheddar, but I tend to be a little more daring.
Like sauteed onion, garlic, porcini mushrooms, chick peas, thyme and parmesan.

When we moved in I was really lost when it came to the local pizza hot spots. The best "house warming" gift that we received came from our new and totally awesome neighbor, who gave us a list of her favorite pizza places with a star rating. Did I mention how awesome she is?

Bicycles & Backpacking

Last summer I wanted to fill a need by making some cute backpacks that I could use when riding my bike. I made mine compact and added a longer strap so it can be worn like a market tote for easy use while I am out.
I have gotten so much use from mine I thought I might put a few in my little shop. Some are simply back packs, while others have the extra strap, and the first batch all feature beautiful floral prints from Naomi Ito.
I have been itching to get back on my bike. There is always a magical, familiar feeling I get when I ride. It has been a bit of a challenge trying to tow both of the kids with the old trailer I found off of craigslist, as it seems to always have flat tires. Now that Phia is going to be five, I was hoping that our biking options would be a little wider, but I am still keeping my Madsen dream alive. Especially after reading this, watching this, and being inspired by this gelato bike.

Signs of the Season

1. Spring Thaw

The ice and snow have finally melted, revealing renewed growth and beautiful landscapes. We live in close proximity to an expansive natural reserve, and while the leaves still have some time before their arrival, it is a wondrous place to explore. I love to watch the kids run wild and free, acting out great adventures.

3. Transitional Flavors

Vegetable Stew is perfect for warm and chilly days, and it reheats well for an easy dinner.
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
2 medium yellow onions, chopped
2 large carrots, sliced
1 stalk celery, chopped
3 cloves garlic, diced

1 cup red wine
1 - 24 oz. can whole tomatoes

4 cups vegetable broth, or other cooking liquid
1 bay leaf
2 sprigs of thyme, minced

1 cup kidney beans, cooked or canned and drained
1 cup frozen corn
salt & pepper to taste

In a stock pot, heat your oil over medium heat and then toss in your onions and sweat them until they are transparent, about 2-3 minutes, and then season them with a pinch of salt. Add in the carrots and celery and let them soften for 2-3 minutes, and then add in the garlic and cook together for another 2-3 minutes, making sure to stir and season appropriately.

Add in the wine (it's going to get a little steamy) and let it cook off for about a minute, while making sure to stir. I like the break my tomatoes apart into pieces (sized to fit on a spoon) as I am putting them into the pot, and then I let this meld together for a minute. Add in your broth, bay leaf and thyme, and then let this cook on low heat for about 20-30 minutes. Throw in the beans, corn and the final touch of salt and pepper, and then continue to cook for another 10 minutes to bring all of the flavors together.

To make it a little heartier, you can add in grated cheese. Parmesean or sharp cheddar work well, each highlighting unique qualities of the stew.

Floral on the Brain

It's just so obvious that I am ready for winter to submit to spring. It has been a cold, dark week and I am looking forward to more budding blossoms to brighten our days. Floral has been on my mind, from things I want to grow to things I want to make.
This purple knit has been sitting in my pile of spring fabrics, waiting to be used, and I couldn't resist the urge to make something simple to help cheer up my wardrobe.

Kitchen Aid

I admit that I am a spoiled eater. Having a husband who cooks delicious food for a living can have that effect. When he is home he whips up perfect little meals, and when I take the reins, he is a great resource to turn to.

I question whether or not I would be able to pull off a balanced diet without Danny's assistance as some ingredients have always been intimidating to me. He makes good food look effortless; he threw this meal together from random items in our freezer and pantry.

Danny started by defrosting a few frozen Pollack fillets we had kicking around in the freezer and laying them out on a tray and seasoning them with a spice mix (Old Bay works well), then generously drizzling olive oil and lemon juice over them. He baked them off in a 400 degree oven, while he prepared a pot of rice and a little stir fry. He sauteed an onion, celery, garlic, and frozen red peppers and then added in some of the cooking liquid from the fish at the end.

What makes this quilt really special is the story that goes along with it. I was really moved when a very wonderful woman asked me to make it for her dear friend who has been courageously battling leukemia. It was an honor to make a quilt that symbolized such love, hope and strength.

The blossoming daffodils and crocus have been uplifting after a bitter winter combined with a particularly sad week spent following coverage of the disaster in Japan. It has been hard to stay focussed on anything other than grief- I find myself obsessively thinking about the loss of life and home, and how I can not even imagine what the affected people are feeling. But, as many people have noted, I am inspired by the strength of the victims, and their will to strive forward.

Through these trying times, I find the best remedies include thoughtful hikes, long trips to the library, and continuing my support for Japan relief efforts.

When I eat fried rice, I can envision long ago summers spent feasting on dishes that my grandmother lovingly prepared. Made just the way that she did, it has become my favorite comfort food.

Although I have been comforted in knowing that my family and friends in Japan are safe, I have been deeply saddened by the devastating footage of destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami.

Lots of thanks to all of the kind words and messages regarding the jackets posted for CTBM. I received some great questions (and perhaps my first hate mail?) and I thought I might share now that, to those of you who are not already aware, I am terrible with correspondence. I am still trying to figure out this very obvious defect of mine, and am currently working through all unanswered messages.

One question asked was what my favorite dish of the moment is. Very easily answered, I have been craving and making lentils like crazy for the past two weeks. Warm or cold, I am loving their delicious earthy flavor, especially with the dramatic temperature changes.

Plus they are easy to make. I saute some onion and carrot in a medium sized sauce pan and then add in two cups of lentils and four cups of water, but if you want, you an instead add in stock. Over medium heat, I add either a sprig of thyme or rosemary, and then cook for about 25-30 minutes. Once they are tender I add salt and a squeeze of lemon juice, and eat them straight up. Yay, lentils.

Guess who has new spring outerwear? For this he should be thanking Rae and Dana, who curated another fantastic month of boy centric projects, which after seeing, made me immediately want to make something for him. To join in the celebration I will be sharing my tutorial on little jackets, and how I embellish them for boys.

I really love stylish little boys, and I think that jackets are nice staples that can really elevate a little boys wardrobe. Most stores carry sizes too bulky for my little guy, so I like to tailor these jackets to fit my son by sizing it from a jacket that I know fits him, and going from there.

I find that little details like sharp collars, faux cuffs, and fun buttons can completely transform a jacket, and once I understood the basic construction of jackets, it was pretty easy to throw together.

These little jackets are pretty easy to make for a novice seamstress. I will show you how to make the basic pea coat, sized from a piece that you know already fits your child, and will also show you my alterations that make the miniature suiting look more tailored.

For these jackets I used about 1 yard of 58" suiting fabric, specifically navy twill, and about the same for the lining, in this case I used a woven plaid I found at Ikea.

I based the size off of a jacket from my son's closet that I knew fit him perfectly (not too loose, and not too tight) by laying the jacket over a piece of parchment paper and marking points at the shoulder, armpit, neck, and at the bottom of the jacket. Then I added some shape to the sides by making it flare out slightly. I also added three inches to the chest so that the lapel will overlap for buttons, and about 3-4 inches on the bottom. After I got the basic shape, I added about 1/2" to the entire perimeter of the pattern for the seams. The back of the jacket, and hood can be made in the same manner, just make sure to add for seam allowances. For the sleeves add about 2" of length at the cuff. If you are unsure about the size, make a muslin before you cut into your suiting material and alter the size accordingly.

You will need the following pieces:

a. 2 front of jacket and 2 linings
b. 1 back of jacket and 1 lining
c. 2 sleeves and 2 linings
d. 2 facings, for each side
e. 1 back facing *
f. 2 pockets and 2 pocket linings *
g-1. 2 collar pieces *
g-2. 2 hood pieces and 2 hood linings

1. With right sides facing, sew together the side seams and shoulder seams of the shell and then the lining, making sure to reinforce accordingly with backstitching at each end. I like to reinforce all seams with the zig zag stitch, especially near the armpits.
2. Put together self lined pockets. a.With right sides facing, sew together the pocket exterior to the pocket lining with 1/4 inch seam, leaving a small opening at the bottom. b. Snip the corners, and turn the pocket out. c. Top stitch across the top edge of the pocket.
3. Place and sew on your pockets. On the right side of the shell place your pockets so that they line up properly, and then sew them on, making sure to reinforce the top edges.
4. Assemble the sleeves. If you would like to add the faux cuffs, see the figure labeled "Optional cuff" at the bottom of this post. Otherwise, prepare your sleeves and then pin and sew them onto the body of the shell and lining. Once the sleeves are ready, you can insert the lining into the shell of the jacket. Try to evenly distribute the fabric, making sure there are no lumps, and then pin at the shoulders and lapel.
5. Assemble your facings. Sew together the front facings to the back facing at the shoulders.
6. Press 1/4" of the facing over along its edge.

7-a. Prepare the collar by sewing the right sides of the fabric together. Trim the corners, turn it out, press and topstitch.

8. Mark the midpoint of the collar, and then mark the midpoint of the back of the neck. Match the points up, and then wrap the collar around the neck until it lines up evenly across the length of the neck. Pin or baste into place.

9. Sew on the facing. Mark the mid point of the facing, and with right sides facing, match it up to the midpoints of the collar and neck of the coat. The layers should be in this order: facing, collar, shell, lining. Work the facing around so that it lines up along the neck. If, at the lapel, there is excess length along the facing, pin it so that it lines up along the side of the jacket as best as possible. Pin or baste into place, and then starting from the bottom of the jacket, sew up and around the neck, and then down to the other side. Trim corners and clip along the neck seam.

10. Attach the facing to the lining. Flip the facing around so that it is laying against the lining, work it around so that it lays flat and evenly, and then pin it in place. Then hand stitch the facing to the lining, making sure not to stitch all the way through the shell.

11. Finish the hem and sleeves. Fold the hem of the coat about .5 - .75", while making it as even as possible. Pin in place and then hand stitch a hem along the bottom. Finish the sleeves in the same the way.

12. Flip the jacket around and add buttons or other closures.

The optional cuff can be added when you are assembling the sleeve. 1.Measure the folded width of your sleeve. 2. Mine was about 5", so I cut out 4 strips of fabric that were 5" in length and 2 3/8" in width. With right sides facing, I sewed them together, trimmed the corners, and then flipped them out and topstitched along the edge. 3. Place the cuff about 2" from the end of the sleeve (you will need a little space for finishing the sleeve) and pin in place. 4. Sew up the sleeve along with the end of the cuff. Once the jacket is done, you can secure it to the sleeve with a button.

To make the facings, I made a copy of the front jacket piece, and then marked a line 3" in along the side, with a gradual curve up to the shoulder. I did the same for the back, starting from the same shoulder point that I ended at on the front, and then making a gradual "u" shape along the back of the neck. For the pockets, I cut rectangles that were 4.5" tall, and 4" wide. For the right length collar, you can mark 3" in from the edge of your lapels, and then measure point to point along the neck line. Mine came out to be around 14.5", so I started with a strip of fabric that was 15.5" long across the top, and about 14.5" long across the bottom since the edges are slanted.

I am so happy for each and every new adventure we take together...
...even if my feet are still sore from walking in merciless boots.

Sweet Expectations

On Saturday we threw a little bash for Ori. Everyone who I talked to about the party had the same big question: what kind of cake was I working on? Each time I answered, I felt a little guilty that instead of an elaborate Thomas cake, little guy would be blowing out candles perched on a simple carrot cake.

While I know that Ori would have been indescribably excited about a Thomas cake, I usually tend to steer away from character theme parties; this preference stems from memories of how awesome parties were when we were kids, and all we had was ice cream cake and balloons. I also think I might save myself some substantial grief in the long run if I hold back while the kids are still young. I can imagine the expectations being a little higher as they get older, and I don't know how wise it would be to set the bar too high now while they are just excited at the prospect of stuffing their faces with sweets. So for now Ori will just have to make due with sugar cookies, decorated with unspecified trains and conductor pin stripes.

Party Time

As a school age child, I always loved a good Valentine's day party. It brightened that late winter void, and really, who doesn't enjoy love and candies?

Phia was invited to her first class party, so I let her paint her own cards for her Valentines.
We took a doily-stencil approach, and once they were cut, signed, and taped onto fruit bars, I thought they looked pretty cheery.

It is a little embarrassing to admit how long this quilt has taken me to finish. I have always had a recipient in mind, and always wanted it to brighten up their end of winter, since those cold months before spring always seem the longest.
I used up many little green and blue scraps to create a lush floral collage. I chose to back it with white chenille and finish it without binding.
This quilt was sent out to an endlessly amazing grandma. She has helped me through hard times and awkward phases, and I am forever thankful for all of her support, guidance, and love.

Birthday Boy

My dearest little boy turned three yesterday. We celebrated in our pajamas, with chocolate cake & make shift tents.

As one would imagine for a three year old boy, he is fascinated by all cars, trains, planes, ect., and he studied his newest acquisition in awe over it's cool factor. Big thanks to Grandma Julie!
When it was time for cake, Daddy got to join us in singing over speaker phone. Little boy has made the past three years so, so special.

Good Start

January was a kind month. Besides spending it either unpacking, snowed in, or fighting an illness, it really has been a nice start to a new year.
For the remaining eleven months, I hope to really dig in and accomplish a few goals on my short list, including:

Food Intolerance Intolerance

Boy, do I not like food intolerances. Years ago my very wonderful sister realized that she could no longer eat red bell peppers. How rough is that? I personally love red peppers, so I can only imagine that it is particularly frustrating for her. Naturally, I control my urge to make red pepper heavy treats until she is back at her apartment in Brooklyn. And then......I like to make red pepper bruschetta. It involves a little sauteing of onion, pepper, and garlic and then a little olive oil "grilling" of crusty bread. For good measure, it may include a quick grate of parmesan.

I lived most of my life thinking that I could eat whatever I want. That is, until last summer, when I started to have allergic reactions to raw apples. Occasionally I can eat one unscathed, but when I start to feel my throat swell, I am quickly reminded that I should probably avoid those sweet, tempting fruits. Every time, it just leaves me wondering, how do other people cope with being told they can't eat something that they love?

Cold: Inside & Out

Forgive me for the very few posts; we are still in the process of setting up and reorganizing our sweet apartment. Things are getting closer to normal a little more each day.

Today we had another opportunity to break out the sled. Danny introduced the kids to our front yard slope, and pulled them around until their cheeks turned pink.
And then to match their frozen toes, they enjoyed frozen drinks. No matter how cold it gets, we can't stop making smoothies. Frozen berries are way more cost effective than fresh this time of year, and they are super good.

Moving Experience

It's official- we have moved into a new apartment. With big bright windows, hardwood floors, and much more space, our new place is undeniably nicer. But, I have to admit, I was really reluctant to move out of our tight duplex.

In general I am not a huge fan of packing or unpacking, but this time the move seemed a little more personal. It was the first time I have felt like a home was being made since we started our family, and even though we weren't living in the most glamorous accommodations, we were in good company; we were surrounded by great neighbors who became great friends. So, adjusting to the new place has been both exciting and sad- I just have to keep telling myself that even though we aren't borrowing cups of sugar anymore, my friends are only a 25 minute drive away. That very happy reminder has been very comforting, along with the package of Jojo's that Ori is so delicately enjoying in the above picture.

Christmas and the days following...

This was one of the few times that Danny has had off for Christmas. Phia and Ori had the opportunity to show off their new books and trains to their Dad before we headed out to visit relatives; it was a very nice treat.

And their new books and trains have been coming in handy since we are experiencing a snow in.
I expect my posts will be scarce as we will be moving on Wednesday- especially since we will be working through 20" of snow left on the ground. So, I hope that everyone has a happy end to 2010!

Warm Thoughts

Here are some shared ideas that help us get through these bone chillingly cold days.

Hot chocolate always help to wake tired children in the morning. I make mine the "French" way; steeping milk and half & half, and then pouring it over chocolate.
Roasts are so perfect when the weather is so cold. The oven warms the house, and the flavors of thyme and brown sugar melding together are irresistible. My sister shared this recipe with me years ago, and this loose interpretation has become a winter time staple in my house.

And this is a new favorite for the kids since they love the Peanuts and catchy songs. It will probably make you want to get up and do a little dance, and that is sure to brighten your day.

Gift Making

Last year I had the pleasure of making the majority of the gifts that we gave to loved ones. Since we are moving, or more so since most of my sewing room is packed up in boxes, handmade gifts are pretty minimal this year.

Thankfully little miss is picking up the slack for me. She made this for her very special pre-k teacher, who happens to have a "cutie little white puppy". She was having trouble making the dog she envisioned, so I made a little stencil and let her go to town with some blue and white paints. After it dried I traced a little face on that she colored with black paint, and we ended up with a modern piece of preschool art.

Birthday Suiting

Since it falls right before holiday festivities, Danny's birthday usually sneaks up on me. This year I did a little planning and made him something that would also be pretty useful considering the ridiculously cold temperatures lately.

He has always wanted an intensely warm coat, so I made him this one after peaking at a few stylish parkas from Urban Outfitters.
The shell is a charcoal bull denim, and the lining is a gray striped suiting material that I quilted with a plush cotton batting.
Although I wanted it to be a surprise gift, I also wanted to make sure it fit properly, so Danny was well aware of what he would be receiving.

And yes, we took the pictures in the back of a moving truck because we are currently packing up all of our earthly possessions and moving them to a new little place that we will be living in sometime around December 29th. It will definitely be a holiday to remember.

Little Works of Art

Season's greetings, from my family, to yours.

The family portrait was completed a little later than planned this year, but with a last minute push, I tried to make it look cute before sending it out to loved ones. After drawing the portrait, I framed it in a collage of vintage stamps and then took a picture of it. The cards were then printed and mailed out with the vintage stamps, which were purchased from this very lovely etsy shop.

The Scranton Skirt

Lately when I have hand sewing to finish, or am just feeling particularly lazy, I have been enjoying past seasons of The Office. I am a really big fan of office looks put together for Angela's character, and between laughs I took note of a couple I wanted to recreate.

I made this skirt from a men's dress shirt that I found at a flea market. They were all labeled "irregular" (the buttons weren't properly aligned) so I picked up a couple for $.50.
After a few alterations, I ended up with a cute high waisted skirt that is office appropriate. I made notes of my alteration process, which can be found on Burdastyle.

Back in Business

The illness has passed, and things have mostly returned to normal.

Little miss had big smiles after her first day back to school, and Ori is ecstatic to have his voice back. I have been working my way through a pile of drawn out projects, scrambling to get them squared away before the real fun begins with holiday sewing.

Quarantined

The kids and I have each taken a turn being sick this week. Like, really, pathetically sick. We haven't boarded ourselves in with a sign on the door, but that might as well have been the case since we did not leave the house (more than a quick ride to drop Danny off at the train station) since Saturday.

I think the worst part is how poorly prepared we were- the only thing that got us through one particularly sad day was the fact that the kids were allowed to watch Ponyo & Milo and Otis on repeat.

But being sick had some cuteness to it. Phia told anyone and everyone who called to check up on us that she had a "favor", and Ori now refers to tissues as "bless you"s. And really, now that we are on the mend, I can't complain- we did have a nice (albiet somewhat uncomfortable) time together, and Ori's voice is still adorable and scratchy.

The Bel Air

Burdastyle is hosting a little contest that I decided to enter, and I have to say, the competition is stiff. It is a contest asking seamsters to design a party look that is era specific. After thinking about it for a day or two, I drove past a very era specific piece of inspiration that has been parked down the street from my house.

I set out to make a dress that was inspired by fifties glam- something with dramatic curves, clean lines, and pretty details. Another point I wanted to hit was making a dress slightly more modernized- I fully intend on wearing this to a party, and didn't want it to look to costume-ish. The bodice is a mint green satin, and the skirt is made from one of my favorite prints from Denyse Schmidt's Hope Valley line. The wide neckline was pin tucked to give the top a more dramatic shape leading down to the velvet belting.

Daring Dinners: Falafel at Home

Whenever I talk about falafel, even in person, I usually end my sentence with the word "yum". I can't help it, I am just crazy about fried chick pea patties.

Falafel

1 cup dried chick peas, rehydrated overnight

1 white onion

3 cloves garlic

2 stems of parsley, chopped

2 tsp. cumin

1 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. baking powder

4 tbsp. flour

After soaking my chickpeas over night, I threw them into my blender along with the onion, garlic, parsley and seasonings. It was a little tricky in the blender- a food processor would be much easier to mix everything together. I blended together what I could, and then when the mix stopped blending, I would clean out the paste on the bottom and repeat this process with any leftover solid peas. Once it forms into a chunky paste, it is time to add in the baking powder and flour. The paste can then be formed into little 1.5" round patties, and set aside.

Before frying I prepared my garnishes to stuff into the my pita. This included green leaf lettuce, shredded carrot, chopped up cucumbers, and instead of the traditional tahini, I used Annie's Asian Sesame dressing.

Heat a layer of canola oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Gently place the falafel patties into the oil, and let each side brown nicely for roughly 3-4 minutes. Transfer these onto a plate lined with a paper towel, and then assemble your pita with the garnishes and falafel. Yum.

...and I am almost prepared for you. I have to warn you- this year I have a few tricks up my sleeves.

Take for instance the fleece hoodies I made for when you get particularly bitter- these babies are long, insulated, and ready to warm a kid up. And I thought that the hand stitched button hole was a nice touch, too.
Phia's is made from an emerald green fleece, lined with a layer of cotton batting & a charming floral print, and adorned with a vintage button.

Daring Dinners: Veggie Burgers

In an attempt to keep the winter dinners around here a little more interesting, I have been mixing some new ideas and ingredients into the weekly meal plan. I love to find new cuisines or techniques to try out, so I thought I might share a few of my successful recipes.

Bulgur & Black Bean BBQ Burgers

1/2 White onion

2 cloves garlic

1 Cup cooked bulgur

1 Cup cooked or canned Black beans

1/4 BBQ Sauce

1/4 Cup Bread crumbs

2 Tablespoons cumin

1 Tablespoon Salt

1 Egg

Sautee the onion in a small amount of oil until it starts to caramelize on the edges, and then add in the garlic and saute for 1 minute more. Turn off the heat and add in the bulgur, black beans and bbq sauce, and proceed the mash the black beans into a paste. Add in the seasonings and bread crumbs, and then put this mix into a bowl. Once this has cooled, add in the egg and fully incorporate. Make patties from this mix, roughly 3" in diameter.

Heat a large saute pan with a thick coat of vegetable oil on medium heat. Brown the outside of each burger, cooking for roughly 2-3 minutes on each side, and then place on a paper towel lined plate.

I finished mine by placing it between a couple slices of toasted french bread, topped with crumbled sharp cheddar, barbeque sauce, and some green leaf lettuce.
